Refreshed, we returned to Sevenagala to play with the children, they challenged us to a game of cricket. Oh dear......
Emmie reports....
After arriving back at the project to a mass of waving hands and smiling children we all headed our way to a large field around the back. All the children showed us up on the organisation as they all most instantly got into a line..... pretty embarrassing on our part.
As we entered the field the 'the bag of wonders' was opened jammed packed with toys and games, the children's eyes instantly lit up.

As you can see the first things the boys went for was the cricket sets, no surprise there. We were challenged to a match, England vs Sri Lanka our ambitions set for it to be a close game but it wasn't.
Our team were first to bat, looking professional in our blue team shirts and feeling confident, that was a mistake. Even with many of the boys smacking the ball miles we only managed 6 runs thanks to the young Sri Lankans amazing fielding skills.
The guys even let some of the girls bat, however it crushed us when we came up to the stumps that all the children moved in. Showing how much their perception of girls playing cricket is yet we showed them with Sarah scoring a run.
Then it was their turn to bat it wasn't a surprise to find that their batting was as good as their fielding. I can't remember the score, mainly because we lost count.
Even though we lost by an extronomical amount it was an excellent game and everyone had fun, but next time we wil re think about agreeing to another match.
Whilst the cricket was playing some of the younger children and young girls participated in some unusual games, thought up by no other than The Speeds. I think they all enjoyed the 'Hokey cokey" the best some shouting louder than Hannah, which was very loud.
Then Cassie had the idea to teach all the children high 5's. My hands were aching after around 40 in one go, it was constant but very funny though. Also 'round and round the garden' became a favourite, the children kept screaming Cassies name for more, which of course she agreed to as it was hilarious and lovely to hear the children laugh so much.
Some of the more adventurous children grabbed the space hoppers and frisbees, endless races on the space hoppers turned into a massive competition between some young boys. The champion was Sanjeev the boy in photo, who even grabbed and ran away with the hopper when we were having to leave.
After a very exciting, fun, energetic and tiring afternoon we returned home in the bus, with the masses of children waving us off and some of us were even honoured enough to be blown kisses.
And Hey to my family, just to say I am having a fantastic time in the lovely heat, but I am tired already so I don't know how I will be by the end, missing you lots and I will see you soon.
Love Em x

Hi Rookwood in Sri Lanka, great to see all the smiling faces in the photos, got your text this morning, thanks. School has finished over here, we are now all waiting for the rain to stop and the summer to start before we go back in sept. The torch went through yesterday to be honest you didn't miss much, over in seconds.
ReplyDeleteMr Ungi retired today and gave a very motivational speech. I passed on your best wishes to him, so he knows you were thinking of him even though you are the other side of the world. Looking forward to the next blog. Mr Pool
